Galeria/Gallery - F6F-3 Hellcat (GPM nr 606) + podstawka / vignette

I would like to present to you another photo gallery this year. This time it is a model of the F6F-3 Hellcat, from the VF-9 US Navy fighter squadron, which was stationed on the USS Essex (CV-9) aircraft carrier. This particular plane took part in the battle of the Gilbert Islands in November 1943 (hence the name of the Betio island on the model's cover). This gallery is also the final of the model build report that I have been running on the blog and on the Konradus paper modelling forum (links to each part of the report below). In addition to the gallery, in today's post, I will show how the vignette imitating the deck of an aircraft carrier was made.

The carrier-based aircraft model will look best on a fragment of the deck of an aircraft carrier, especially if it has folded wings. Here, the initiative came from Piotr Walo from the Model Hobby Publishing House, who showed me his design of the vignette imitating the deck of an American aircraft carrier from World War II. A fragment of the deck, laser-burned on 1.5 mm thick cardboard shows, in addition to the wooden deck, also the place where the hook cables were located. I had the pleasure to try this product, just like a few years ago the deck of a Japanese aircraft carrier, on which I placed the D3A Val plane model. Both decks are available in the publisher's store.

Kartonowy pokład w pierwszej kolejności zaimpregnowałem caponem. Następnie nakleiłem go na odpowiednio przycięty kawałek płyty meblowej.
The cardboard deck was first impregnated with a wood impregnate. Then I glued it on a properly cut piece of furniture board. When everything dried, came time for painting work. The decks of American aircraft carriers were grey-blue, I had to do a bit of research because maritime topics are not so good known to me as aviation. Anyway, the colour was called US Navy deck blue and I tried to do something like that by mixing the paints. But first, I put a grey Vallejo surface primer on it. Then there were about 5-6 layers - first very dark, almost black shadows, then a few shades of grey-blue. In the place where there are hook cables (made from a metal string or bike brake cable) and metal fittings between the boards, I also sprinkled a little bit of gunmetal colour. Then I applied the varnish and when it dried, I started to grind it. I did it with an abrasive block with the gritting of 150 and 180. The next stage of work was powdering with powdered pastels. I used a mixture of different colours, blue, grey-blue, grey, black, white, and brown. I applied the powder (or rubbed it in) with dry brushes of various sizes. Finally, I applied another layer of matte varnish to the deck. At the very end, I attached self-made, well-matched and varnished with colourless varnish wooden (pine) frames on the sides.  I am very happy with the result.

Przejdźmy teraz do właściwej galerii modelu. W standardzie byłoby to mocniej widoczne.

Now let's move on to the main model gallery. To sum up - despite numerous minor errors in the design and imperfections made by the publishing and printing house, I managed to build a nice model. The mentioned errors mainly concern the framework and elements inside the model. There are also misprints such as the wrong colours of the parts. Most of these errors are easy to correct, as I showed in the model build report. The fuselage itself and the sheathing fit very well and without any problems. The model has different shades of skin colour, but due to the fact that the wings are in the folded position, it is not so noticeable. It would be more visible in the unfolded position. The first four photos show the model before the assembly of the left wing (the wheel rims are still too dark on them, the photos were taken before I correct it). The purpose of these photos is to show the structure of the wing, besides, without the wing, the fuselage and the canopy are nicely exposed. After assembling the wing, this part of the model is a little bit covered and poorly lit from most perspectives. The remaining photos show the finished model, the wings are permanently installed, and the engine cowling can be taken off. Enjoy!
