Relacja/Model build - F6F-3 Hellcat (GPM nr 606) Część I/Part I

Model Hellcata wydanego przez GPM w zeszycie 606 (8/2021) kupiłem zaraz po tym jak się ukazał. Oprócz zeszytu zamówiłem także dedykowane do modelu laserowe dodatki i szkielet. Wkrótce potem pokryłem arkusze caponem i odłożyłem żeby nabrał mocy urzędowej. Wiadome jednak było, że nie będzie długo czekał na swoją kolej do pocięcia - Hellcat to "must have" na mojej liście, klasyczny "warbird", na którego długo czekałem.

I bought the Hellcat model published by GPM right after it appeared in August 2021 (no. 606). Moreover, I also ordered laser-cut accessories and a framework dedicated to the model. Shortly thereafter, I impregnated the sheets and set them in the "waiting room" (or just in the drawer). However I knew, that it would not wait long for his turn to build - Hellcat is a "must have" on my list, a classic "warbird" that I have been waiting for a long time.

GPM wydał równolegle dwa Hellcaty - bohatera mojej relacji, błękitnego w malowaniu z 1943 z okresu walk o Archipelag Wysp Gilberta, stacjonującego na lotniskowcu USS Essex) oraz szeroko i krwiście uśmiechniętego kocura w słynnym malowaniu z okresu walk o Leyte (1944) (GPM nr 605). Całe szczęście, że wybrałem tego pierwszego, bo jak pokazał kolega Kedzier na Konradusie, szczerzący kły Hellcat jest kompletnym drukarskim niewypałem - różnice wkolorach na arkuszach są ogromne. Poza tym wyszło na jaw kilka innych błędów związanych z konstrukcją tylnej części kadłuba. Przypadkiem odkrycia te zbiegły się w czasie z momentem, w którym decydowałem o tym jaki model pójdzie jako kolejny pod nóż. Głosy dobiegające z forum mówiły głośno "nie klej tego, źle się zapowiada", ale ciekawość wygrała. A zatem... zapraszam zatem do relacji, nie obiecuję, że będzie miała szczęśliwy finał. Pierwsze rozczarowanie (?) albo raczej potwierdzenie obaw: również Hellcat "Beito" ma różne kolory na arkuszach.  Od kabiny pilota do osłony silnika niebieski ma inny odcień. Nie jest to tak drastyczne jak w przypadku "Leyte", ale jest. W przeciwieństwie do uśmiechniętego Hellcata, błękitnego jeszcze to nie dyskwalifikuje. Pozostaje jedynie niesmak.  Spośród modeli GPM, które miałem przyjemność kleić tylko RWD-17W nie miał różnych odcieni - może dlatego, że był biało-czerwony i nakładając tylko jeden kolor udało się drukarni nałożyć go poprawnie. To jest irytujące, rozczarowujące i trzeba o tym głośno mówić. Małe Modelarze z lat 90 nie miały takich problemów z kolorami jak te modele wydane w 2021. W modelu nie ma zapasu koloru, ale może to i lepiej. Istnieje bowiem niebezpieczeństwo, że zapas byłby inny niż oba kolory jednolitego poszycia.

GPM published two Hellcats at the same time - the protagonist of my account, a blue painting from 1943 from the period of the battles for the Gilbert Islands, stationed on the USS Essex aircraft carrier) and a vast and bloody smiling cat in the famous painting from the period of the Battle of Leyte (1944) (GPM no. 605). Fortunately, I chose the first one, because as our colleague Kedzier on the Konradus paper modelling forum showed, the grinning Hellcat is a complete printing failure- the colour differences on the sheets are huge. In addition, several other flaws and bugs in the design of the tail and cockpit came to light. These discoveries coincided with the moment when I decided which model would go in my workshop. Voices from the forum said aloud "don't build this, it looks bad", but curiosity won. So ...I start the build report, but I do not promise that it will have a happy ending.  First disappointment or rather a confirmation of fears: "Beito" Hellcat has also different colours on the sheets. From the cockpit to the engine cover, blue has a different shade. It's not as drastic as with "Leyte", but it is. Contrary to the smiling Hellcat, the blue one is not disqualified at the very beginning. Only disgust remains. Among the GPM models that I had the pleasure to build, only the RWD-17W did not have different shades of colours - maybe because it was white and red and by applying only one colour, the printing house managed to apply it correctly. This is annoying and disappointing, and I have to write about it. "Mały Modelarz" from the 90s did not have such colour problems as those released in 2021. There is no colour spare in the model, but maybe it's better. There is a risk that the spare colour would be different from the colours of the plane's sheathing.

Budowę rozpocząłem od wycięcia większości oklejek poszycia, od tego, który jest przed osłoną silnika po sam ogon. Uformowałem je, uzbroiłem w paski łączące i skleiłem ze sobą bez wręg w środku. Skleiłem także szkielet centralnej części kadłuba, żeby móc na bieżąco dopasowywać płaty poszycia. Zrobiłem tak dlatego, żeby po pierwsze sprawdzić spasowanie elementów, a po drugie zobaczyć jak różnica w kolorach wygląda na większym kawałku kadłuba. Spasowanie jest bardzo dobre, różnica w kolorach widoczna, ale do przełknięcia - myślę, że na gotowym modelu nie będzie aż tak kłuć w oczy.

I started the build by cutting out most of the skin, from the one in front of the engine nacelle to the tail. I shaped them, armed them with connecting strips and glued them together without any frames inside. I also built the framework of the central part of the fuselage to be able to adjust the skin panels on an ongoing basis. I did it to check if the skin fits, and to see what the difference in colours looks like on a larger piece of the fuselage. The fitting is very good, the difference in colours is visible, but not dramatic - I think that on the finished model it will not be so stinging in the eyes.

Podobnie jak na zdjęciach pokazanych na Konradusie przez Kedziera - kształt wręgi WA1 nie pokrywa się z elementem B3, który trzeba na nią nakleić, wpusty w tej wrędze też są źle naniesione. Błąd łatwy do skorygowania. Poza tym nie znalazłem kolorowego, zielonego elementu, który należałoby nakleić z tyłu wręgi WA4. Zamalowałem wręgę od tyłu na kolor kokpitu. Co do kolorów i retuszu - dobrałem sobie taki zestaw farbek Vallejo - zielony 70.895 odpowiednio rozjaśniony białym pasuje idealnie do kabiny. Niebieski kolor kadłuba uzyskuję z mieszanki dwóch niebieskich - 71.108 i 71.088 rozjaśnionych odpowiednio białym. Tu trzeba wziąć poprawkę na to, że przód kaduba ma nieco inny kolor niż tył i różnicę tę można uzyskać "brudząc" mieszankę kroplą zieleni - wtedy uzyskamy kolor przodu kadłuba. Na dole szary, to łatwe. Poza tym używam także suchych pasteli.

As in the photos shown on Konradus by Kedzier - the shape of the WA1 frame does not coincide with the B3 element, which needs to be glued on it, the grooves in this frame are also incorrectly placed. Easy to correct. Besides, I did not find a coloured, green element that should be glued on the back of the WA4 frame. I painted the back of the frame the colour of the cockpit. When talking about the colours and retouching - I chose this Vallejo self-made paint set - green 70.895 properly lightened with white fits perfectly into the cockpit. The blue color of the fuselage is obtained from a mixture of two blue ones - 71.108 and 71.088 lightened with white respectively. Here you have to take an amendment to the fact that the front of the fuselage has a slightly different colour than the rear and this difference can be obtained by "staining" the mixture with a drop of green - then we will get the colour of the front of the fuselage. The belly is easy, light grey. Besides, I also use dry pastels.
